Understanding Addiction in Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills, with its iconic lifestyle and endless opportunities, can also amplify the challenges of addiction. From the stress of celebrity culture to the demands of executive life, many find themselves turning to drugs or alcohol as a coping mechanism. But here’s the good news: as a leading addiction treatment center in Beverly Hills, Forward Recovery is dedicated to addressing these unique pressures. Our drug and alcohol rehab center in Beverly Hills is designed to meet you where you are, offering a discreet, upscale environment that feels worlds away from the chaos.

Substance abuse isn’t just a habit—it’s a complex issue often intertwined with mental health concerns like depression. That’s why we also integrate dual-diagnosis care to tackle both addiction and co-occurring disorders. If you’re looking for drug rehab centers in Beverly Hills, know that our approach is holistic, focusing on the whole person. We’ve seen countless individuals transform their lives here, and we believe you can too. Why wait? The path to recovery starts with recognizing the need for help, and Forward Recovery is ready to walk alongside you.

The Dangers of Detox: Why Professional Help is Crucial

Detoxing from drugs or alcohol is often the first hurdle in recovery, but it’s one that should never be faced alone. For substances like alcohol, withdrawal can be potentially fatal, leading to severe symptoms such as seizures, delirium tremens, or even death if not managed properly. Delirium tremens is a severe form of alcohol withdrawal that involves sudden and severe mental or nervous system changes. Similarly, opioids like heroin pose significant risks during detox, including intense withdrawal symptoms that can lead to dehydration, relapse, or other complications. Opioid withdrawal syndrome is a life-threatening condition resulting from opioid dependence.

At Forward Recovery, our residential detox center in Beverly Hills prioritizes safety above all. We recommend inpatient medically assisted treatment for these high-risk detoxes, where our team monitors vital signs, administers medications to ease symptoms, and provides emotional support. Imagine detoxing in a comfortable, private setting surrounded by professionals who truly care—it’s not just safer; it’s the compassionate choice that sets the foundation for long-term success. If you’re dealing with heroin addiction, our heroin rehabs California programs are tailored to handle these challenges with expertise drawn from California’s comprehensive addiction treatment landscape.

Inpatient Medically Assisted Rehab: The Best Solution for Managing Addiction

When it comes to overcoming addiction, inpatient medically assisted rehab stands out as the gold standard. This intensive approach provides a structured environment where you can focus entirely on recovery without the distractions or triggers of daily life. Studies show that residential treatment is highly effective for substance use disorders, often leading to better outcomes in abstinence and long-term sobriety compared to less immersive options. At Forward Recovery, our inpatient drug rehab center Beverly Hills offers round-the-clock medical supervision, therapy sessions, and personalized plans that address the root causes of addiction.

What makes inpatient care the best? It’s the comprehensive support: from managing withdrawal symptoms safely to building coping skills through evidence-based therapies. For those with severe addictions, long-term residential programs—lasting from 28 days to several months—have demonstrated success rates as high as 68-71% for sustained abstinence when completed. In California, where access to quality care is bolstered by a growing workforce of mental health professionals, our programs leverage this strength to deliver exceptional results. As one of the top California long term rehabs, we emphasize long-term rehabilitation, ensuring you leave equipped for a substance-free life. If you’re ready to commit to change, our rehab in Beverly Hills is the ideal place to start—safe, supportive, and proven effective.

When first starting your hunt to find the perfect treatment center, it might help to get a better understanding of the type of treatment you are seeking. Recovery begins with a detox period, where medical and mental health supervision is highly advised to ensure safety of the individual. Drug detox can be an uncomfortable experience, and without proper help and supervision, it often leads a person to drug relapse, just to cure the pain and discomfort.

Although the detox period typically lasts up to 2 weeks, there are rehab centers that can provide up to 60 days of detox and treatment. Most inpatient and outpatient rehab centers offer detox support and there are several factors that can contribute to the cost. These factors include:

Insurance coverage

Type of and severity of addiction

Treatment center location

Amenities offered

Any prior recovery attempts

Addiction Center (https://www.addictioncenter.com/rehab-questions/cost-of-drug-and-alcohol-treatment/) estimates that the average cost of a detox program is about $1,000-$1,500, but it is important to check these costs before entering into treatment.

Understand the Types of Services You Get in a Drug Rehabilitation Program

When choosing a drug rehab center, you should know the exact types of services you will get that are within your rehab budget. Inpatient and outpatient rehabs typically offer intensive therapy (individual, group and sometimes family), as well as group educational classes on various topics to help treat your addiction. Many inpatient facilities will offer engaging activities such as daily yoga and workout classes, or even art and music therapy.

Outpatient drug rehabs provide you with the resources needed to break free from addiction, while allowing you to continue maintaining your normal routine. Inpatient rehab centers provide you with 24/7 care and more individualized treatment options. Make sure you are fully aware of your own needs, and what the facility or program has to offer before choosing your treatment center.

Different Factors That Decide Your Rehab Budget

Depending on the type of Addiction treatment center you are seeking, there are several different factors that can help determine your rehab budget. These might include:

Type of insurance you have, if any at all

Previous income/ savings

Possible payment plans

Other support (family, friends, etc.)

There are also several low-cost drug rehab centers in Los Angeles that may offer payment plans or alternative options for seeking help. The financial expenses of drug rehab should not stop you from seeking the help you deserve.

Private Drug Rehab Cost with Insurance

Private drug rehab (https://www.addictioncenter.com/rehab-questions/cost-of-drug-and-alcohol-treatment/) centers can be costly, but with the help of insurance, most of these costs may be covered. Fortunately, most rehab centers do accept various types of insurance such as Medicaid or Medicare, private insurance, government assisted insurance, and military insurance.

Treatment options can vary from 30 day rehab, 60 day rehab, and 90 day rehab. Sometimes, the time period can be extended to long-term, lasting up to a year. Depending on the duration of time, costs can range from $6,000-$20,000 (30 day rehab), to $12,000-$60,000 (60-90 day rehab). Insurance is likely to help cover most of these costs of a private drug rehab.

Private Drug Rehab Cost without Insurance

While the cost of private drug rehab centers can be highly expensive when compared to other low-cost drug rehab centers in Los Angeles, most centers are willing to discuss payment plans and payment options if you lack insurance. Outpatient programs are less costly, ranging from about $5,000-$10,000 for a 90 day rehab. If you are seeking a private drug rehab and do not qualify for any kind of insurance, speak with the rehab staff and ask about different payment plans they may be able to offer to help you treat your addiction.

Types of Rehabs Available in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is filled with many different types of drug rehab treatment options. Different options include both inpatient and outpatient and can range from:

30-day rehab

45-day rehab

60-day rehab or 60-day detox

90-day rehab

There are several different low-cost drug rehab centers in Los Angeles, as well as different holistic approach centers. It is important to be fully aware of your own addiction recovery needs, and your rehab budget. This will help you narrow down your treatment center options and choose the best fit for you.

If you have already been diagnosed with a seizure disorder, tramadol may not be the right choice for you. We are listing down other serious Side Effects of Tramadol Abuse below:

Nausea and vomiting

Constipation

Dizziness

Headache

Euphoria

Indigestion

Spasticity

Weakness

Rash

Itching or swelling of the skin

Severe dizziness

Trouble breathing

Side Effects of Tramadol Abuse have temporary and permanent damaging affects to your brain and body. Tramadol dependence can occur and if this happens it is important to seek addiction treatment services immediately.

Understanding Tramadol

Tramadol is a pain medication and calms the central nervous system. The name brand medication of tramadol is called Ultram.[1]This medication is similar to an opioid and is considered a synthetic opioid.[2]There is also an extended-release form of tramadol, but this is used for people who need constant pain relief and is prescribed on an as needed basis.

Like many other opioids, tramadol slows the respiratory system and can be deadly when misused. There are many side effects of tramadol abuse that can cause serious health problems, overdose, and death.

It’s important to only take the amount of tramadol prescribed to you and consider other options for pain medication if you have a seizure disorder, trouble breathing, have suicidal thoughts, use alcohol, or if you are taking other opioids.

Common Tramadol Uses

Tramadol treats pain and is prescribed to patients who also have chronic pain. It’s important to stop using any other opioids when taking tramadol.

Tramadol is also prescribed when withdrawing from opioid addiction. The starting dose of tramadol is 25 milligrams and can be increased depending on the patient.[3]

You can only get tramadol prescribed and cannot obtain it ever the counter due to it’s risks and possible addiction properties. Does tramadol make you high?

The high from tramadol can dangerously increase when using other opioids and this usually leads to tramadol addiction.

When prescribed, tramadol is taken orally as a capsule or tablet form. You should never crush, chew, break, or dissolve the medication. Using tramadol for recreational use and snorting tramadol can put you at a very high chance for a seizure and overdose.

Signs of Tramadol Abuse

Tramadol addiction side effects can put you at risk for poor decision making. If you or someone you know has been abusing pain medications, it’s important to be on the lookout for signs of tramadol abuse.

There are some key tramadol dependence symptoms that lead to abuse:[4]

Cravings that are overwhelming

Higher tolerance

Dependence of tramadol to feel normal

Repeated attempts to stop using tramadol

Lack of money from buying tramadol on the street

Stealing to try to obtain tramadol

Changing friends and behaviors to abuse tramadol

Loss of interest in friends and family and activities

Can I get Addicted to Tramadol?

If you have been experiencing moderate to severe chronic pain you may be asking yourself, can I get addicted to tramadol? Can you get high off tramadol? These are important questions and crucial when determining if tramadol is right for you.

Tramadol can be addictive especially when you are using them with another addictive opioid. This pain medication when misused can give you a high feeling. Is Ultram addictive? Yes, the name brand is still addictive and can involve the same risks of side effects and overdose.

According to CDC Wonder, 56,516 deaths were reported in 2020 alone due to overdose from synthetic drugs including Fentanyl. The number of people abusing this drug seems to be a lot higher than people think it is and it is very dangerous. This article tells you a complete story about Fentanyl, its overdose symptoms & side effects.

What is Fentanyl?

Fentanyl was originally developed as a pain medication that is to be given to patients once they are out of surgery. It is a narcotic pain med that carries a significant risk of addiction among users. While it was originally intended to be used as a pain med, it was later used as an ingredient in many other types of medicine. It works rapidly and is very powerful, as much as 50 to 100 times that of Morphine which is an opioid-based pain med.

So, it’s important that you understand the concerns of Fentanyl abuse, which actually can go from “worse” to “worst” pretty fast. So, what can you do? How can you help? Well, before you do anything, you will need to understand the signs and symptoms to recognize if a person is abusing Fentanyl. Only then you can confirm and confront the user about it and get them the drug addiction treatment that they need. With that said, let’s begin.

Signs and Symptoms of Fentanyl Addiction

If a user is abusing Fentanyl, they will show up with two or more of the following signs and symptoms. It is important that you pay attention and look for these signs and symptoms of fentanyl, and if you can confirm that a user is showing two or more of these signs and symptoms, get them to a rehab center for proper treatment.

Significant mood shifts and changes in behavior. They could get irritated for no good reason and would prefer to stay in isolation.

Side Effects of Use of Fentanyl

The severity of the side effects of the use of Fentanyl depends on the dosage of the drug. Depending on the exact dosage, a user could be experiencing some or all of the side effects. Here are some of the most common side effects of Fentanyl.

Confusion, dizziness, or lightheadedness.

Blurred vision, nervousness, or pounding in the ears.

Labored or irregular breathing.

Dry mouth, cough, or pale skin.

Tingling sensation or swelling in arms, legs, or feet.

The feeling of tightness in the chest, chest pain, or back pain.

Fatigue, sunken eyes, sore throat, ulcers, or white spots inside the mouth.

How Can Detox Centers Help?

The number of issues fentanyl abuse can lead to is not really that surprising. If you have read the symptoms and the side effects of taking this drug, then you already know about its potential short-term and long-term issues. Not to mention that under the influence of this, one could engage in unwanted sexual behavior and increases the risk of sexually transmitted disease or unwanted pregnancies. Even without these issues, fentanyl abuse can harm you in many ways, both physically and mentally.

Abuse of fentanyl can even compromise important functions of the immune system and can even lead to some serious organ failure. Drug overdose is another risk that’s involved among drug abusers. According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 70,630 people died as a result of a drug overdose in 2019 and now the number is expected to be much higher. The only institutes that are capable of handling such situations are your rehab and detox centers. The Rehab center’s staff are highly educated on the subject matter and well trained to deal with these cases.

They have both residential inpatient treatment programs and outpatient treatment programs and depending on the need and the requirement of the user, one of the programs will be prescribed for them. There are various rehab centers in Los Angeles that you can look into. They have specially trained staff, 2/7 surveillance, doctors present on the premises, and also have various other amenities.

Wrapping Up

Before we wrap this up, let’s go through it briefly. Fentanyl is a narcotic pain medication that is often abused. It was originally given to patients after surgeries but even completely healthy people are now taking it. After a while, they build up a tolerance and start abusing it. The abuse leads to various psychological and health issues that can be easily noticeable. But if it goes unnoticed, it could go out of hand and could lead to an overdose.

Sometimes, a user tends to self-medicate their addiction or their family may force them to quit, which could be even worse, as it will accelerate the period of drug withdrawal symptoms. Only trained specialists are equipped to deal with drug withdrawal symptoms and they should be taken to a rehab center instead. They also have residential inpatient programs as well where they monitor a user’s health status through 24/7 surveillance to ensure utmost care and treatment while they are in that program.

Foward Recovery is committed to providing the best possible care they can and they accept most major insurances to help ease the financial burdens of the patients’ families. They have 2 different rehab centers in LA. Just call (844) 387-6889 to get started.
The post Signs and Symptoms of Fentanyl Addiction appeared first on Forward Recovery.

I was born on a Tuesday at 5:58pm. I was overall a good kid – did well in school and was involved in as many extra-curricular activities as my mother could squeeze me into. I remember from a young age the importance my mother put on being well rounded to prepare for college applications. I also remember her doing much of my homework for me as she could obviously do it better than an elementary school girl. My grades somehow defined her. I learned from a young age that my mother’s well-being and emotional stability was contingent upon me being ok. Therefore, I quickly learned to put on a happy face, no matter how miserable I felt inside.

Being an only child, coupled with the fact that my father was a traveling salesman and gone much of the time, I learned to be my mother’s “emotional partner.” The covert/emotional incest lasted into my late 30’s.

As like most kids in high school, I experimented with alcohol and marijuana. While those were not my drugs of choice, I can see clearly that every time I drank or used, I had major consequences (i.e. had my stomach pumped).

College was uneventful as far as addiction as I was too focused on school and being an athlete. Once I graduated, my addiction took over. I didn’t live in the same state as my parents. I was able to convince them that I needed help for depression, not drugs. At this point, my family had no reason not to trust me. I went to my first treatment center at the age of 25 as I was convinced they could cure me of depression. By the age of 27, I had sold myself to the devil, smoking crack cocaine round the clock. I was arrested for drug possession, I lied and stole from everyone, and I prostituted myself for just one more hit of crack.

During the time I was in that first rehab, my parents learned about addiction and the benefits of getting involved with Al Anon – or at least my mother did.

My parents did everything they could think of to help – by putting me through numerous treatment programs, giving me money, helping me relocate, etc. At the age of 32, I begrudgingly agreed to go to a long-term residential program. The best thing my mother did was not talk to me for 6 months. While I know it was tough love, it felt like abandonment at times.

At that point, I had no internal motivation to change or to do the work necessary to stay sober. Whoever tells you that you have to want recovery in order to get sober, is absolutely wrong. I’m living proof of that!

I learned that as difficult as it was to hear, having a same sex support group willing to call me on my denial, the lies I tell myself and my irrational belief system was critical.

I used to hate going to 12-step meetings where members identified as “grateful recovering addicts.” I didn’t understand how anyone could be grateful that had a drug problem. Today, I understand it. I was a liar, cheat and a thief way before I knew about drugs and alcohol. If it wasn’t for this program, I would have continued on in negative behaviors. Alcoholics Anonymous taught me how to be honest and to be “happy, joyous and free.”

Recovery is a daily reprieve from active addiction. Over time, I have learned that I can do anything for just one day.

If you think marijuana is no big deal…read on to see my downward spiral into the world of opiate addiction & how my parents helped my recovery success

When you hear celebrities and politicians telling you marijuana is no big deal and harmless, don’t believe them! I’m telling you this first hand so you can avoid this happening to your kid, spouse or friend. What began as a way to relax to deal with pressures of school quickly turned into a lifestyle of drug addiction. If you don’t think marijuana can lead to heroin and opiate addiction, especially not to your son or daughter, read this, because it is absolutely a gateway drug!

With the promise of a shiny new sports car upon graduation, I did what it took to squeak by finishing school. Marijuana and pounding down beers wasn’t cutting it. I needed something stronger to boost me through finals. When I told my friend Jake I was having a rough time focusing on studying, he said he had something to help me out. Apparently, Jake’s dad takes lots of painkillers (aka opiates) since his car accident messed up his back and neck. Percocet, oxycodone and whatever else he got his hands on. So Jakes’s dad’s doctor inadvertently became my drug dealer and I got my corvette!

Unfortunately my drug addiction did not stop when I graduated high school. I was completely overwhelmed by college and needed a new way to get me through each day. Since opiate painkillers were no longer an option, I became friends with the cool kids who were into heroin. When snorting it wasn’t cutting it, I began shooting heroin. This was my new normal until my corvette was no longer shiny or new and I landed in the hospital after crashing into a cement utility pole. I don’t remember blacking out or the accident when I awoke in the hospital. I was back in the world of opiates with frequent doses of Percocet.

When the tox screen results came back my parents freaked. They didn’t even know I was using, let alone had a drug addiction. As soon as I was released from the hospital they shipped me off to drug rehab. I started with detox which was hell, but I made it through the whole 30 days and was ready to come home. Apparently my parents had other plans for me. Turns out Jake had overdosed when I was in inpatient rehab and there was no way my parents were going to let that happen to their son. So I was stuck in drug rehab for another 60 days. I resisted at first but then made some real connections in group therapy with guys who were just like me but seemed so much more together. I figured if they can do it, so can I. So, I stopped fighting myself and decided to listen to the treatment staff.

I am far from in the clear but I am sober. I live in a sober living home with some of the guys from drug rehab. I have a part time job and go to outpatient treatment every day. I’m continuously learning to respect myself and how to live with integrity. Thank God my parents had the foresight to look beyond my lies, deceit and abuse to get me the help I truly needed. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Take the first step and contact Valley Detox Center 24/7 at (888) 544-6049 to begin your road to recovery.

The post My Life: From Heroin and Opiate Addiction to Recovery Success appeared first on Forward Recovery.

Utilizing the many holistic and nutritional services available in Los Angeles, California while in the medical detox process for drug & alcohol addictions

With the epidemic of drug addiction, particularly opiates like Vicodin, Percocet and heroin, rehab centers in Los Angeles, California are flourishing, but are they effective? There are just too many stories of people who have been in and out of drug or alcohol rehabs only to lose their battle.

A key reason behind this has to do with using ineffective approaches to both the treatment as well as the medical detoxification process. However, it’s also important to understand that entering a medical detox center is merely the first step in the journey to successful recovery. It is also important to understand that integrating holistic services within the detox and treatment processes can absolutely improve one’s hopes at attaining long-term success!

There are plenty of choices for medical detoxification in Los Angeles and like any other industry, the leaders set themselves apart by offering the most comprehensive, quality services that cater to their customer’s needs. Therefore, a medical detox center that just rids your body of opiates, Benzodiazepines, heroin, alcohol, etc. and that’s all, is not addressing drug addiction and alcoholism. Those treatment facilities that offer a holistic treatment approach to drug and alcohol addiction are helping to provide their patients with a better chance for lasting recovery.

Why choose a holistic drug and alcohol addiction rehab?

Drug addiction and alcoholism are complex diseases that make it difficult to decipher the root cause. Some addicts are trying to numb their physical pain. Others may be suffering from mental anguish or a spiritual void. Since our mind, body and spirit are interrelated and when one is out of balance it affects the other, taking a holistic approach, beginning with medical detox, allows treatment professionals to implement a full scope of modalities to facilitate and expedite effective healing. The focus is on a patient’s overall health and well- being, thus, they have an opportunity to creating a better quality of life while at a holistic rehab and to experience long lasting recovery.

What services are available at a holistic rehab?

In addition to traditional treatment options such as medical detox, individual/group therapy and support groups, holistic rehabs typically offer the following holistic services:

Physical fitness: hiking, biking, mountain climbing, etc.

Spiritual sessions: meditation, yoga, etc.

Alternative Psychotherapy: art therapy, equine therapy, horticulture, music therapy, etc.

Nutrition: health, organic meals, etc.

Who can benefit from a holistic rehab?

Although anyone can benefit from a holistic detox and rehab, those that have tried traditional treatment environments and are still struggling with sobriety may find greater success within a well-structured holistic program. Remember this, no two addictions are ultimately alike, and it is therefore extremely important to be in a program that recognizes this reality. Holistic detox and treatment programs often times are better equipped to address these individual needs.

To learn more about medical detox, holistic rehab and which is the best treatment option for your drug addiction or alcoholism, please contact Valley Detox Center at (888) 544-6049.

The post Bringing Holistic Services into Medical Detox for Drug Addiction appeared first on Forward Recovery.

With many drug rehab treatment centers utilizing drug & alcohol detox, it is important that patients be aware of its importance within the recovery process

Although you may have finally resolved to quit taking drugs, your good intentions, discipline and strength are no match for the effects of addiction. Your desire to quit cold turkey may be admirable, however, in the long run, you are not giving yourself a fair and realistic chance at lasting sobriety. What we can’t ignore is the basic facts of drug and alcohol addiction and the long term damage of the disease. Just as a disease of cancer wreaks havoc on your body, you would not consider overcoming it’s power without a proper course of treatment. So, the basic facts about withdrawal from drug and alcohol addiction are such: substance abuse causes physical and chemical changes to the brain; physical and psychological symptoms occur in withdrawal and there are several health risks involved upon withdrawal. For these reasons and so many more, it is imperative that in order to ensure safe withdrawal and lasting sobriety, it is essential to begin your path to recovery with medical detox.

Typical drug rehab will unlikely be able to offer the level of care and sophistication that a facility specializing in medical detox can provide. Choosing an actual sub-acute medical facility with a hospital type setting versus a standard drug rehab allows your first and most important step in recovery to be patient-centric, rather than the patient having to go along with the rehab’s business needs. Furthermore, having treatment professionals who specialize in medical detox and who can cater to your withdrawal symptoms and medication management is paramount to your recovery success.

The two fold reasoning for medical detox – ridding the body of toxins from substance abuse and to minimize the physiological and psychological symptoms of withdrawal – has flooded the nation with a host of options for both drug rehab and medical detoxification facilities. You are not alone for wondering and perhaps being confused as to the best path for you or your loved one. The first thing to understand is that medical detox, albeit a critical step towards recovery, is merely the first phase, and by no means is it considered treatment for chemical dependency. That being said, your treatment is actually an entire plan and process that must be effectively designed especially for you, based on your specific situation.

Before choosing a treatment facility, please consider the following factors:

The Treatment Facility – condition and cleanliness; credentials and approval from the county and state specialization; results.

The Treatment Staff – are they actual licensed treatment professionals who specialize in addiction recovery and medical detox, medical doctors, RN’s, EMT’s or just technicians.

The Patient to Staff Ratio – the symptoms from withdrawal from drug and alcohol addiction have a serious emotional and physiological impact and thus a small ratio of patient to staff who are monitoring you every step of the way is critical.

The Treatment Plan – it begins with a proper evaluation by medical professionals based on the effects of your particular chemical dependency and any underlying mental health issues; a determination for the appropriate medication management (i.e. Suboxone) and withdrawal support; and after the first step of medical detox is complete, what types of therapy will be necessary for treatment of your actual addiction.

Too often, too many of us hear the failings of individuals in their battle against addiction, whether it be through continuous relapse or drug overdose. Like anything else in life, there are good therapists and bad as well as reputable drug rehabs and medical detox facilities and some that have improper credentials or abused their practices. There are some wonderful treatment facilities who may get a bad wrap in the industry, simply because of the shortcomings of others. Check with your local and federal authorities and get references and statistics on the effectiveness of their recovery treatment.

It takes courage and strength to take the first step and admit you have an addiction to drugs or alcohol. But this disease is too complex to fight on your own and requires the love and support of family and friends and the appropriate medical professionals who are able to evaluate, stabilize and help you to recover and beat your addiction. For more information on medical detox and drug and alcohol addiction, please contact Valley Detox Center 24/7 at (888) 544-6049.

The post The Importance of Medical Detox Within Addiction Treatment appeared first on Forward Recovery.

The all-too-common story of innocently going from a daily Vicodin or Percocet (Opiate & Opioids) pain regimen into a full-blown heroin addiction – almost overnight!

I am eternally grateful my doctor never prescribed pain pills for my back, before or after my surgery. The most I took was ibuprofen and drank some wine, but thankfully never lead to any substance abuse. Unfortunately, too many people aren’t as lucky as me. Pain Management has become a common medical practice and a pathway to drug addiction. Doctors prescribing opiates and opioids are not resolving the source of the pain, but rather numbing it, and worse off, they are opening the door for their patients’ chemical dependency, especially heroin, that could be fatal. In order to curb opioid abuse and eliminate pill mills, many states have been registering pain clinics and electronically monitoring prescription drugs to help reduce use of these opioid narcotics.

I am not trying to be an alarmist, just a realist sounding off on America’s new epidemic – opioids and opiates. Opioids are natural or synthetic chemicals that bind to receptors in your brain or body. Heroin and prescription drugs such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, and fentanyl are considered opioids. You may have heard of fentanyl in the news recently, since that is what caused Prince’s death. Fentanyl is fifty times stronger than heroin. Prince had been to many different doctors around the country and was able to get opioids from a number of them since there is no central database for drug prescriptions.

In 2014, more than 28,000 people died from opioid overdose, and at least half of those deaths involved a prescription opioid. In 2014, more than 10,500 people died from heroin.

It’s not just those on prescribed painkillers that are at risk of drug addiction. Too many adolescents, teens and young adults are abusing prescription drugs which include narcotic painkillers, sedatives, tranquilizers, and stimulants. There are several ways prescription drug abuse begins:

Taking someone else’s prescription drug

Taking a larger dose than prescribed

Using the medication in a different way than prescribed such as crushing tablets and then snorting or injecting them

Using the medicine to get high

Unfortunately, it doesn’t end with prescription drugs. The substance abuse too often leads to drug addiction and when there are no more prescription drugs to be had, too often people resort to street drugs such as heroin and crack. There is a hardly a city in the US that is not dealing with a drug overdose crisis, typically from opioids like heroin.

For those fortunate enough to be living in Los Angeles, CA and The San Fernando Valley, medical detox for drug & alcohol addictions offers more service options.

California has one of the highest concentrations of addiction treatment centers in the nation, many of which are located in Los Angeles, or its surrounding neighborhoods, such as San Fernando Valley. Given the city’s long history of drug and alcohol addiction, it’s not surprising how many drug rehabs are located in LA. Los Angeles may be the poster child for luxury rehabs, but California is also home to holistic centers, affordable treatment, sober living homes and the finest medical detox programs.

What makes Los Angeles, California such a hotbed of drug addiction is perhaps the city’s short distance from Mexico. The primary drugs that feed into LA from south of the border are heroin (particularly “black tar”), cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana. Upscale adolescents, suburban housewives and middle-aged thrill seekers do them. Gangs wage turf wars over them. It is common for kids to have done pot, ecstasy, cocaine, and heroin by the time they graduate high school. Although drug addiction seems epidemic, alcoholism still remains prevalent, whereby both diseases can benefit from medical detox.

The first step towards recovery from drug and alcohol addiction is medical detox. California has the world’s leading medical doctors and professional staff qualified to address drug and alcohol addiction and administer medical detox. They will evaluate any pre-existing medical conditions that could affect detox; subscribe medication that allows for safe, effective transition during detoxification (i.e. Suboxone); provide nutritional care to ensure the patient stays healthy through withdrawal symptoms; then detoxification followed by continued assessment of the patient’s needs.

Medical detoxification safely manages the acute physical symptoms of withdrawal associated with stopping drug and alcohol use. However, medical detoxification is only the first stage of addiction treatment and by itself does little to change long-term drug use.

The San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, a region collectively home to some 1.8 million people, where abuse of heroin has skyrocketed since shortly after the turn of the millennium. One of the reasons is it’s availability in a smokeable form as a blend with marijuana that need not be injected to have the desired narcotic effect. In Los Angeles, CA, overdose remains one of the leading causes of both premature and general death in the metropolitan area, in part due to the dramatic increase in fatalities from prescription drugs (which nationally eclipse those of cocaine and heroin combined).

On a much lighter note, once you are on the road to recovery from your drug or alcohol addiction, San Fernando Valley, California (sometimes called The Valley), and it’s surrounding neighborhoods such as Glendale, Burbank, Sherman Oaks, Tarzana and Calabasas, are spectacular with so much diversity, charm and fun things to do. When in San Fernando Valley, you must see Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Citywalk, Mission San Fernando, NoHo Arts District, Van Nuys Japanese Garden, O’Melveny Park. There are also many places to hike in the mountains that surround the Valley. For you fashionistas and gourmets, Ventura Boulevard, a strip of high-end restaurants and shops that stretches from Universal City to Thousand Oaks. Here you’ll find everything from diners and fast-food joints, boutique shopping to traditional clothing stores, grocery stores, coffee shops and lots of retail shopping.

The San Fernando Valley has a centralized location for attractions such as the Getty Center Museum, Six Flags Magic Mountain, the beaches of Santa Monica and Malibu, and The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. The region is conveniently accessible from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) via the FlyAway Van Nuys bus service, or you can fly directly into the Valley via Bob Hope Airport in Burbank. If you’re coming from Downtown, the Metro Red Line stops in both North Hollywood and Universal City.
