CARSON DALY’S HELPFUL EXERCISE IN AVOIDING ANXIETY

A number of celebrities and sports stars have been coming forward lately to talk about their struggles with anxiety, so much so that some are likening it to the #MeToo movement where so many people have been open about a past trauma. Now Carson Daly is one of the latest celebrities to openly talk about his struggles with anxiety, and how he fights it. While Daly knows anxiety is something he’ll probably have to deal with for the rest of his life, he certainly understands it better these days, and like many who suffer from it, he came up with his own personal coping mechanism. Daly told Today that he practices an exercise where he puts his arms in front of him, tightens his hands into fists, clenches the muscles in his forearms and biceps, and squeezes as hard as his can. Essentially it’s like you’re lifting weights without actually lifting weights. After five to ten seconds, you let go and release. This technique is a bit similar to controlled breathing where you hold in your breath then let it out. Here you make yourself tense like you’re lifting weights, then release the tension and relax. Again, many who suffer from anxiety have their own personal rituals that work for them, and this technique, muscle retention relaxation, definitely works for Carson. Once he let’s go, he tells Today he’ll feel “an ocean of relaxation,” and as he’s grown older, he knows that anxiety is something he has to live with, but he says, “I really wear the way I am like a badge of honor. This is who I am and I’m proud of it.”
